Our Past is Our Future
I am honored to be this year’s Gift Print artist. I have been interested and working in the arts from childhood, growing up in the west of Ireland. I had a small introduction to fine arts in Limerick city where I learned the basics of darkroom photography and printmaking. An opportunity to travel brought me to the islands—first to Maui, then to Honolulu in 2018. One of the first things I did was to join Honolulu Printmakers. I got to experience the true joy of pulling prints on the press, and I’ve been hooked ever since. It is truly wonderful for me to be able to express my heartfelt gratitude to Honolulu Printmakers and to all of our members. Our Past is Our Future is a reduction linocut, created from a single piece of linoleum that has been successively carved and printed, using nine custom-mixed lithography inks. I appreciate the slight variations that come with hand-pulled prints, and incorporate them into the edition of multiple original images. The inspiration for this print came after looking through old archives of photos from the “gas station” days, and thinking about where we are today. I wanted to create a thank-you to the founders and those who have supported Honolulu Printmakers for decades. Some of those images appear as part of the vellum housing for each impression. In Hawai`i, there is no better way to express thanks than to create and give a lei. Our Past is Our Future is thus a message of love, appreciation, and gratitude to Honolulu Printmakers, and to all the artists who came together to create this space and teach aspiring artists old and new printmaking processes.
