JUROR STATEMENT

It is an honor to be the juror for the 2024 Honolulu Printmakers annual show. I came to Hawaiʻi in 2022 as a curatorial fellow in works on paper, photography, and new media at Honolulu Museum of Art where I work with the Western collection. Since my very first days, I was impressed by the long tradition and quality of printmaking in Hawaiʻi. This show is further evidence of the level of creativity and talent among artists here. The Honolulu Printmakers have been seminal to the definition of the arts in Hawaiʻi since the beginning of the last century. Many of Hawaii’s most respected artists have provided a gift print for the annual show and many more have supported the Printmakers as instructors, volunteers, or students, assuring that there is a communal place for the development of the creative arts. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this institution and this community.

As a juror, I strived to show a representative slice of the work being produced here today. I endeavored to judge each work on its own merits while being inclusive of stylistic categories. Printmaking is an intimate medium and digital reproductions do not do it justice. The details in texture, color, and line are not always available on the screen. The decisions were difficult, and I might have erred at times. If your work was not selected this year, I would encourage you to apply again next year and to continue to explore and expand on the medium of printmaking.

Let me thank the Honolulu Printmakers for the great service they provide our community and to all those who entered the exhibition for their creativity and courage in sharing their work. Congratulations to all!

Alejandra Rojas Silva — Works on Paper, Photography and New Media Fellow  Honolulu Museum of Art

Alejandra Rojas Silva, Ph.D. is currently the Works on Paper, Photography and New Media Fellow at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Her curatorial work, research, and teaching extend from the early modern period to the present, focusing on issues of identity on both sides of the Atlantic. Her current exhibition, Disasters of War Then and Now pairs prints by Spanish artist Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) with works by contemporary American artist Enrique Chagoya (born in Mexico City, 1953). She holds a doctorate and an M.A. in History of Art and Architecture (Colonial Latin American Art) from Harvard University, a Master of Studies in History of Art and Visual Culture from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies from Earlham College.

ARTIST INVOLVEMENT and RESPONSIBILITIES

Presentation Matters - All 2D work should be carefully framed and thoughtful consideration for the presentation for 3D work. If you work require special installation please plan to install it yourself or make arrangements in advance. We will contact you soon with a google form to finalize your price and exhibition label.

Artists participating in the show are required to do 2 —4 hour shifts at our secondary location at the Downtown Arts Center. HP Monitors are responsible for sitting the show at 1142 Bethel Street Studio. Sitting the show is a great opportunity to connect with the community and represent printmaking in Hawaii. It is a lot of fun and hopefully not a burden. If you are available for extra shifts we would appreciate your help supporting the exhibition with your time. Volunteer sign up will be posted in the studio and you will receive a call to schedule a time slot.

Neighbor island artists are exempt but welcome to participate as they are able.

DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED WORK

Saturday March 30th 4pm - 7pm Oahu based artists deliver their artwork to the printmaking studio at 1142 Bethel Street. We will have a parking spot reserved in front of our studio and volunteers to assist with receiving your artwork. Please take all packaging home with you. We cannot store any packaging materials due to limited space.

SALES FEE

Sales of work are subject to a 50% exhibition commission fee. This fee supports the continuation of the Annual Exhibition and furthers the advancement and appreciation of printmaking in Hawai’i. HP actively promotes the sale of your artwork both in person and online for the duration of the exhibition. Production of editioned prints offered for sale unframed are strongly encouraged to increase possible sale of artwork.
